Important Update for Gig Workers: Online Registration for Business Numbers
Starting November 3, 2025, new business number registrations must be done online through the CRA. Here’s what gig workers need to know.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced a significant change for businesses, including gig workers and self-employed individuals. Starting November 3, 2025, registering for a new business number (BN) or CRA program account will only be possible through their online portal, Business Registration Online (BRO).
This move aims to streamline the registration process, making it quicker, easier, and more secure. Instead of calling the Business Enquiries line, you will now be directed to the BRO portal, allowing you to handle your registration from anywhere, 21 hours a day. You can expect instant confirmation once your registration is complete.
The BRO portal not only helps you create a new BN but also permits you to register for various CRA program accounts tied to your business. This means reduced wait times and a simpler process for obtaining necessary information to manage your taxes effectively.
While the new system covers most registration needs, there are still some exceptions where you may need to call the CRA. For instance, if you're reactivating a closed account or if your business has specific ownership situations.
If you’re considering starting a business, understanding what a Business Number is essential. It's a unique identifier issued by the CRA for your business dealings and is necessary for various tax obligations, such as GST/HST collection or payroll accounts. Having a clear grasp of how to navigate these requirements will help ensure you meet your obligations smoothly.
Remember, while this information is helpful, it doesn’t replace professional tax advice tailored to your situation. Make sure to prepare for this change to keep your business compliant and running efficiently.
